Nigerian Internet Scams

It's only been about 10 days since I've gotten the new computer and I've already received 14 e*mail scams. Are these gettting to everyone else too? Like the following:
"Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Dr A.O Martins,I represent a group of business men who
deal on raw materials and export into Europe/America.
We set out to searching for representatives who would help us
establish a medium of getting to our costumers in America/Europe as well
as
making payments through you to us.If you are interested in transacting
business with us we will be very glad.
Subject to your satisfaction you will be given the
opportunity to negotiate your mode of which we will pay for your services
as our representative in Europe/America.
Please if you are interested forward to us your phone/fax
number and your full contact addresses,This will also be forwared to the
customers.
Thanks,
CEO

instructions has been passed to all various Government quarters that all

by beneficiary's has been received by the Minister.

what this office want you to reconfirm, with your telephone and fax numbers,any
other information, WHY you have not received your payment up-till date?.

However I will give my assistance to make sure your file is in order for
payment as two people came for the claim of the fund and submitted account
saying that you are not well.

but you must give me a promissory note stating your willingness to give
me a reasonable amount of money from your contract payment immediately you
get the payment.

I've gotten lots of these over the years. There are numerous sites that post many of these letters. The way it works is that they keep asking for money to grease the palms of one official after the other or some border guard. But you can guess that you never get anything other than broke.

I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

In the 14-years since he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access the his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names.

Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous. In return, we have agreed to offer you 20 percent of the transferred sum, while 10 percent shall be set aside for incidental expenses (internal and external) between the parties in the course of the transaction. These did originate from Nigeria. The gov't there was in on it. It's how they got some 'funding'.

Now it can come from anywhere.

Wow I'm glad I'm not alone. It's so annoying! The worst was the SwissAir tragedy where the guy's saying there's some Swiss cash hidden by one of the dead passengers or pilots. Sickening. Even I think that's too low. I like to send a reply saying I will do it if I can get 50% of the cash sent to me by mail first. I tell them I really want to do it but won't unless I can get some of the cash first. They never hit me back for some reason.

These 419 scams are annoying - I get about 6 a day!! You can inform your local police fraud squad. Many departments are set up to track these and get them at the source. A flood of them increased after 911 and again after the tsunami in Asia with pleas for aid.

A few times when bored I had fun with them and wrote back playing along with their little scam, and one time I told them no thanks because I had more money than I could ever spend...another time I told them I was in the same boat as they were and that some group called the irs was holding hostage in some dark cell somewhere. But most of the time I just delete them.
